Animal Rights Groups Want 57-Month Sentence for Michael Vick

The heat the Pit-bull breed is getting had reached its peak with the Michael Vick dog fighting trial. By nasty coincidence, attacks on people by alleged "Pit-bull" breed made everything roll down hill. It is rather sad that the victims of dog fighting don't get anything out of the case. All the 53dogs found in Michael Vicks property are held as evidence but deemed as unfit for rehabilitation. Everyone deserves a second chance, which Vick is going to get once he finishes his 54-month jail stint. Unfortunately, the 66 dogs he trained, terrorized and conditioned to fight to survive and not get tortured are written off as fertilizer or if rumors are true, dog food!

For Animal Rights Advocates and responsible owners of extremely tame Pits are outraged by the seemingly slap on the wrist Vick is set to get. Hopefully as the Judge promised an audience with advocates, the sentence may just be stiffer.

According to state witnesses, accomplices who turned on Vick, the dogs will go through a temperament test that will be an indication for them as prospective champions. As described in the proceedings, witness recount of how Vick participated in the killing of several dogs on his property. These dogs were mercilessly killed for their sick amusement all because they were found not wicked enough to make the cut. Narrated also were cases of losing dogs from Vick's kennel having been tortured despite of putting up a good fight to be able to survive their opponents attacks.

When all is said and done, the question still remains what of the breed? The Pit-bull had been getting news of its "notoriety" even if proper identification has been made of any dog in a mauling attack. People like greedy Vick have mixed the American Pit-Bull with other breeds that appearance does not really count for a positive identification. Analysis of what a dog's breed really is and proper news reporting may have lessened the frenzy of portraying all American Pit-Bull dogs to be killers.

It is rather sad that a along with other breeds that are considered as dangers to society, the Pit-bull will just have to fritter away since breeding will be prohibited if most BSL legislation is passed and signed.

As a post script, as docile pet Pit-bulls of responsible owners may be the last of their line, illegal kennels and dog farms will continue to churn out, factory style Pit-bulls. Surely, if bred with just profit in mind, ethics will be thrown out the window. The ones able to breed will be the unlawful scum like Vick who let money talk. Unethical breeding does not adhere to the standards of dog breeding. Incompatible pairing that may cause more harm to the public will be done to the delight of illegal dog fighting kennels that will continue to plague us.
