Missing someone is not confined to human beings only, cats and dogs suffering from separation anxiety suffer from a normal human feeling. Most dogs mope around and exhibit certain sadness when a favorite family member is out. Most companion dogs are from breeds that herd or have a strong sense of family. Pet dogs are said to be so human-like that pet owners who experience seeing pets pine for their favorite are alarmed and seek out a cure. A pet dog that is used to seeing and being with a person during the summer just can't understand why out of the blue, the person is missing most of the day. Pet dogs may show human similarities but it still can't view the word as rational as we do. A pet works and survives by making association; a stern voice is a reprimand; a pat is a compliment; elevated dog feeder is meal time; a leash in hand is walk time. The latter were examples of associations that your pet has in mind, associating its favorite human disappearing to anything is just way beyond its thinking.

Pet cats suffer just about the way pet dogs do, though dogs would just be content in mooning. Pet cats are more vocal and a notch more destructive that pet dogs. Clawing at posts, table legs, mats that are usually used by the object of their bewilderment is where felines and canines differ. 

Possible solutions would be taking your pet to the school when you'd bring your child to school for about a week. The next week, take the dog to the bus stop with you and see your child off. Be with the dog when the child arrives, then the next week have the pet dog settle on an old shirt used by you child, chances are it will feel better with the scent. Theories about dogs having a keen sense of smell memory, where imprints of smell rule their reaction to different things. An unpleasant smell brings out apprehension and at times aggression. Smells associated with security are highly treasured by pet dogs.

Pet cats may be difficult to walk to the bus stop, but a ride to the school for the first 2 days is enough for them to see where their favorite goes. If their favorite is away at college or out of town, it is best to use the used old shirt or a used old pillow case.

For both cats and dogs, engaging them in activity is a way for them to not think of their favorite at all. Some people invest in pet toys to be able to help their pets get over missing someone. One of the best solutions ever suggested by a pet expert would be showing more love for the pet and creating a bond similar to the one the pet has with the missed person. Going through all the trouble of assuring your pet is one of the promises made by a pet owner to a pet, training and cheering them up may eat a chunk of your time but it would be very much worth it.
